Window upgrades

Old windows work against you every summer.

Single-pane glass in an aluminum frame was standard on a lot of older Southern California houses. Aluminum moves heat fast, and one layer of glass has very little to stop it, so on a hot afternoon the frame and the glass both pass the heat right inside. Put your hand near an old window in August and you can feel it. A dual-pane window has two layers of glass with a sealed space between them, and a vinyl frame does not carry heat the way aluminum does. That is the whole idea of this upgrade: slow the heat down before your AC has to deal with it.

Not every upgrade delivers what people expect, and that usually comes down to the glass and the install. In a climate like ours, blocking the sun's heat matters more than holding heat in. Look at the rating label on a window: a lower solar heat gain number means less of that heat gets through. Be careful with big promises about your electric bill, too. New windows will block more heat and noise than old single-pane ones, but your bill also depends on your AC, your attic and how the house sits to the sun. A poorly sealed new window also gives back much of the benefit.

You can usually spot the windows that should go first. Fog trapped between two panes means the seal has failed. Frames that are hot to the touch, windows that stick or will not lock, and rooms that stay warm long after sundown are all good signs. Street-side bedrooms are a smart place to start if noise is the complaint. You do not have to do the whole house at once, and west and south facing rooms usually give you the most relief first. Tell us which rooms bother you most, and send a photo of the windows in them.

57%

Most Palm Springs homes were built before 1980.

Census numbers show 57 percent there, and Riverside is right behind it. Houses from those years are the likeliest to still have single-pane glass or aluminum frames.

Questions

Window upgrade questions.

How do I know if my windows are single-pane?

Look at the edge of the glass near the frame. A dual-pane window shows a thin spacer between two layers of glass. If you see one sheet of glass and no spacer, it is single-pane. Send a photo if you are not sure.

Will new windows lower my electric bill?

They can help, but we will not promise a number. The result depends on your old windows, your AC, your attic and how much sun the house gets. What you should notice is a room that holds its temperature better.

Can I upgrade a few windows at a time?

Yes. Plenty of homeowners start with the rooms that get the worst afternoon sun and do the rest later. Let us know the plan up front so the frames can match down the road.

What areas do you cover?

Moreno Valley and the whole Inland Empire, plus Palm Springs, Palm Desert and the rest of the Coachella Valley.

Are you licensed?

Yes. RJ Construction is a California contractor, license #816869.

How long have you been in business?

Since 2003. RJ Construction is family owned and operated, with over 30 years of experience in home improvement.

How do I get a price?

Send the estimate form or text us a photo of the door or window. We come out, measure, and go over the price with you before any work starts.
