Security & storm doors

A second door with a real job to do.

A security screen door and a storm door can look alike from the street, but they do different jobs. A security door is about keeping people out while the main door stands open. It has a steel frame, a tough screen and a real lock, so you can let the evening air through without leaving the house open. A storm door is about weather. It adds a layer against dust, wind and drafts, and many have a panel that swaps between glass and screen. Some homes want one at the front and the other at the back, so start with the problem you are trying to solve.

A security door is only as strong as what holds it to the house. The frame has to be fastened into solid framing, not just into stucco or trim. That is where the shortcut shows up on a rushed job, and a door that looks tough can flex or pry loose. Hinges have to be set so they cannot be lifted off from outside, and the door has to line up with its lock so you are not slamming it to get it shut. It also has to clear the main door and its handle, with an even gap around it so bugs and dust stay out.

Heat is the thing to plan around out here. A storm door with full glass on a wall that gets hard afternoon sun can trap heat against your main door, enough to damage the finish on some doors. Many door makers warn about this, so check before you put full glass on a west or south wall. A screen panel is often the better choice in those spots, at least through the summer. Also think about how you would leave in a hurry. A lock that needs a key on the inside is a real problem in a fire, so keep that in mind when you pick hardware.

115°F

Glass storm doors and desert sun need a plan.

Inland Empire summers push past 100° and the Coachella Valley hits 115°. A door facing that sun all afternoon needs the right panel, not just the best looking one.

Questions

Security & storm door questions.

Will a security door fit over my existing front door?

Usually, as long as it can clear the handle on your main door and the frame around the opening is flat enough to mount to. We check that when we come out to measure.

Can I still get a breeze through a storm door?

Yes, on many of them. Look for a screen section or a panel that swaps from glass to screen. Tell us you want airflow when you reach out, so we can talk about the right one for that opening.

Security door or storm door, which one do I need?

If you want the main door open with the house still locked up, go with a security door. If you want a layer against dust and drafts, go with a storm door. If you want both at different doors, that works too.
