Exterior doors

The door is the easy part. The opening is the job.

A new front door looks simple from the curb, but most of the work is in the opening around it. The door has to sit plumb and square so it swings without help, latches without a shove, and stays put when you leave it halfway open. That takes shims at the hinges and the strike, long screws into the framing, and a threshold set level on a floor that often is not. Double doors ask for more, since two leaves have to meet evenly from top to bottom. When the fit is right, you stop thinking about the door at all.

Rushed installs tend to fail at the bottom and at the edges, where nothing shows on day one. A threshold without good sealing underneath lets water and dust creep in under the flooring. Gaps left behind the trim let summer heat straight into the entry. Foam sprayed in too heavily can bow a jamb, and then the door rubs for the rest of its life. On a stucco house, the joint around the frame is what keeps weather out of the wall, so it gets the same care as the door. That is what hung square, sealed tight and trimmed clean comes down to.

Before you call, think about how you use the door. Which way it swings, whether the sun hits it in the afternoon, and whether you want glass, iron or a solid panel all change what makes sense. Dark finishes and big glass work harder on a west or south wall out here, so that is worth talking through before you settle on a style. Patio doors are their own decision too. A slider saves floor space, and a French door gives you a wide swing. Text us a photo of the opening and we can talk through what fits.

40%

Four in ten Moreno Valley homes went up in the 1980s.

That is what the Census shows, 40 percent of the city's homes in one decade. Forty years of sun is a long time for an original door and threshold.

Questions

Exterior door questions.

Can you replace just the door, or does the frame have to go too?

That depends on the frame. If the jamb is warped or rotted, or the threshold is worn out, a new door in a new frame is usually the better job. A photo of the opening helps, and we confirm it when we come out to measure.

Should I pick a slider or a French door for the patio?

A slider never swings into the room, so it suits tight spaces and furniture close to the door. A French door opens wider, but it needs clear floor to swing. Look at what sits around the opening, then tell us how you use the patio.

Does a door with a lot of glass let in more heat?

Usually, yes, more than a solid door, and most of all on a wall that gets afternoon sun. Shade over the door and the type of glass both matter. If the door faces west or south, tell us and we will factor it in when you pick a style.

What areas do you cover?

Moreno Valley and the whole Inland Empire, plus Palm Springs, Palm Desert and the rest of the Coachella Valley.

Are you licensed?

Yes. RJ Construction is a California contractor, license #816869.

Since 2003. RJ Construction is family owned and operated, with over 30 years of experience in home improvement.
